Library Program Mission
"The mission of the school library is to ensure students and staff are effective users of information and ideas. This mission is accomplished:
-
by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats,
-
by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas,
-
by working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students."

Library Policies & Procedures
Behavior
A great many Oak Ridge students prefer the library as a place to study, research, read for pleasure, complete homework, and meet friends. Because the library is often crowded, it is imperative that all patrons respect the needs of others and protect materials from damage or loss. It is in the spirit of respect that these rules are in effect:
- conversation volume must be kept low
- cell phones must not be used in the library
- materials must either be returned to the appropriate shelves or brought to the circulation desk for check-out or reshelving
- computers are to be used only for school related tasks
- students wishing to study or research have priority for available seating
There are 92 seats available in the library. During the busiest times of the day, the library staff will ask students not engaged in school related tasks to give up their seats to students needing to finish assignments, research, or study. The staff thanks students in advance for complying.
Passes
The only acceptable library pass is one written by a teacher in a student's planner. Students visiting the library during any class period must either have passes in their planners or copies of their schedules showing they have no class during that period. Passes are not required before school, during any break, or after school.
Circulation
All circulating materials are checked out for two weeks at a time and may be renewed. No reference materials are circulated. Current magazine issues are also not circulated, but back issues of any magazine may be checked out.
Patrons are responsible for returning materials on time and in good condition. Overdue fines are $.10 each school day. Patrons will be charged the replacement cost of lost or damaged materials plus a $2.00 per item processing fee.
Computers & Computer Use
- Computers may only be used for school related work
- E-mail may only be accessed for school related work
- Print a web page after doing a "Print Preview" to make sure the site will actually print
- When other students are waiting for computers, abbreviate your time at computers to allow others to use the equipment
- Absolutely no food or drink at the computers
Logging on to the School's Network (and also logging into Destiny, the ORHS Library Catalog):
USERNAME = First 4 letters of your last name + your student ID number
PASSWORD = last four digits of your permanent ID number
Printing a Document:
- From the File menu, choose Print Preview. The preview will allow you to see how many pages will print and, if you are printing a web site, what will actually be printed. The first five pages you print are free; after that, it's ten cents a page.
- Select "Library Walkin Lab" printer
- Give the print command only once. If the document doesn't print, report the problem to the library staff
- Students may print 5 pages free. The cost for additional pages is 10 cents per page.
Adding a Printer:
- 1. Go to the START menu, select SETTINGS, then select PRINTERS
- 2. When the PRINTER window appears, select ADD A PRINTER (unless the Library Walkin Printer appears, in which case you must ask the staff for help)
- 3. Select NEXT when the WELCOME TO THE ADD PRINTER WIZARD window appears
- 4. The LOCAL OR NETWORK PRINTER window will appear. Select a NETWORK PRINTER, OR A PRINTER ATTACHED TO ANOTHER COMPUTER, and then select NEXT
- 5. At the SPECIFY A PRINTER window, select FIND A PRINTER IN THE DIRECTORY. Select NEXT.
- 6. From the drop down menu on the FIND PRINTERS window, choose FROM THE ENTIRE DIRECTORY. Select FIND NOW. The window will expand, listing all printers in the directory. You may need to reposition the window in order to see the alphabetical list of printers. Scroll down to LIBRARY WALKIN, select it, then select OK.
- 7. Select FINISH from the last window. Exit.
Textbooks
By now, you've checked out the books you need for your courses this year.
Here are a few things to remember:
- · Write your name on the chart located on each book's inside cover. That way, if you misplace the book, the person who finds it will know it is checked out to you and will be able to return it.
- · The care of your textbooks is your responsibility. Cover each book and do everything else necessary to ensure that you are able to return the books in good condition. Know that you will be held responsible for the replacement cost of damaged or lost books.
- · If you find someone's misplaced textbook, please bring it to the library. We'll check it in so that it is no longer on a student's record.
The following applies to textbooks for all courses except English. Questions, problems, returns, etc. concerning English textbooks must be taken to the English department's book room
- · If you drop a course, bring the textbook for that course back to the library immediately. If you wait, you are likely to misplace the book and be held responsible for its replacement cost.
- · If you add a course, it is your responsibility to immediately visit the library to check out the required textbook for that course.
- · If there is a problem with your textbook, please tell the library staff as soon as possible. We will do all we can to rectify the problem.
- · When you return a textbook to the library, wait for a library staff member to check it in and tell you that your record is cleared for that book. Don't put textbooks in the book return box.
We wish you great success in all your studies this year.

Have a terrific year!!
