From the Desk of Steve Wehr, Principal
Oak Ridge High School has had a wonderful second semester as our students continue to thrive in a teaching and learning environment that fosters student success. Through our wide variety of academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, students have been able to acquire, practice, and apply their knowledge and skill. Students at Oak Ridge High School have enjoyed success in our visual and performing arts program, through our athletic program, and through the multitude of academic and student leadership opportunities afforded our students. We have much to be proud of!
What follows is a sampling of the incredible talents ORHS students demonstrates everyday. Please enjoy this issue of Celebrating Academic Excellence and thank you for your ongoing support.

Awards & Recognition
Fourth Congressional District Art Competition
United States Representative John Doolittle announced on May 12th the winners of the Fourth Congressional District
Competition, “An Artistic Discovery”. Jason DeCruz, a
senior at Oak Ridge High School was announced as the first place winner. Jason’s artwork, titled “Through the Paper”, was one of thirty-one pieces judged by a panel of jurors consisting of artists from Nevada, El Dorado and Placer Counties and will hang in the Cannon Tunnel in Washington D.C. for a year.
In addition, Jason and his parents will be flown to Washington D.C. for a reception. Representative Doolittle also awarded Jason a $5,000 scholarship and will be attending College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach, CA.
Governor’s Academic Award
Julia Nguyen, a junior at Oak Ridge High School was honored at Governor Schwarzenegger’s First Annual Academic Recognition Dinner held March 11th at the Sacramento Convention Center.
The event was created to acknowledge the remarkable achievements of exemplary students representing all 58 California counties. Julia was nominated for this prestigious award by County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Vicki L. Barber. Nominations were based upon SAT, PSAT scores, GPA, Class Rank and Extra and Co-Curricular activities.
Julia, a member of the Oak Ridge High School Academic Decathlon team, placed second in the County Academic Decathlon competition. She also participates in the American Mathematics Competition, is on the Leadership Team of the Grants Advisory Board for Youth, is a member of the National Honor Society, and is a junior volunteer at Marshall Hospital.
“Don’t Buy the Lie”
Kaiser Permanente was pleased to announce the winners of the 15th Annual “Don’t Buy the Lie” tobacco use prevention contest. The artwork of Alyson Chavez a sophomore at Oak Ridge was chosen as one of this year’s 2008 High School Winners. Congratulations.
Boys’ State Representative
We are pleased to announce that Robby Gordan has been elected to represent Oak Ridge High School at the 71st annual American Legion California Golden Boys’ State program. One week out of the summer, young men selected across California will join together at CSU, Sacramento to get a practical experience to what constitutes the successful operation of government. This will be a great opportunity for Robby!

Robot Masters Set Record
The Oak Ridge Robotic Team, Brian Kim, Katie Tucker along with Shefali Pandya, and Shivani Sharma of Rolling Hills Middle School came back from the Asian Open Championship setting new California as well as the World Record, in the first Lego League Robot Performance. The Asian Open Championship was held in Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan. The event was attended by the top teams in the world. Fifty-eight teams from 25 countries were invited. Robot Masters was one of four teams representing the USA. The other three teams came from New York areas. Despite not winning the first place award, the Robot Masters were elated in demonstrating what they could do in terms of breaking the California record, becoming the 11th team in the world (during 10 years of FLL competitions) to get three perfect 400’s in the world competition and exhibiting a true ingenuity and collaboration, when they demonstrated a 660 point run. The team is optimistic that this record will stand for a while considering a normal “perfect” score is 400.

These students included locals, Kyle Welling, Lauryn Caruso, Spencer Borup, Tristan Rummery, and Erica Wilens. Phil Kan, one of Healy’s first students at Oak Ridge was the acting Master of Ceremonies.

ORHS Community Support
We would like to thank the parents for continuing to contribute their time and energy to students clubs, our visual and performing arts program, our sports program and other school activities. Their willingness to volunteer allows us to persist in our community-wide effort to offer our students incredible opportunities. The ORHS Foundation, School Site Council, Music Boosters, Theater Boosters and our Sports Boosters have been fantastic and have contributed so much to the students, staff and school.
Further, we would like to thank all local businesses that continue to support Oak Ridge High School. Your help is greatly appreciated!
